The Northern Ireland protocol was a necessary consequence of the Brexit deal agreed upon in 2019.
Despite this, the protocol has remained controversial since the Northern Ireland Assembly failed to be re-established following the 2022 Stormont elections.
To address this, the UK Government and European Commission have negotiated the Windsor Framework which aims to establish new customs, trading and governance arrangements in Northern Ireland and deal with concerns over the protocol.
